Native
American Influences
This photo, taken in Old Town (the historical district, downtown Albuquerque),
is a fine example of the historic influences local Indian cultures have
had on the architecture of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The building is patterned
after the tan adobe dwellings used by Native Americans in the area. The
ladder is also patterned after those used in the ancient mesa dwellings
of the Anasazi Indians native to the Albuquerque, Santa Fe areas of New
Mexico. The color palette of tan and turquoise is also rooted in Indian
culture, while the yellow, blue and red in the hanging dress reflect a
Mexican heritage.
This casual yet striking composition is typical of what you see in the
Albuquerque area, particularly in the Old Town area, and in downtown Albuquerque
to a lesser degree. Essential elements of Albuquerque Style!
